Liturgy in Sacred Heart Monatery Chapel

An invitation to journey with us in our ministry and mission...

For over a century, the Benedictine Sisters of Cullman, Alabama have joyfully witnessed God’s presence and have spread God’s love by responding to the needs of people in our community, our region, and as far away as Africa. We have been called to minister in large metropolitan parishes, rural schools in tiny hamlets, university classrooms, clinics for the poor, and many other places of Christian service and witness. On any given day you can find our Sisters praying with the dying, comforting the sorrowful, caring for the sick, seeking justice for the innocent, offering spiritual guidance and religious education, and teaching both young and old.

We are deeply rooted in and nurtured by our Roman Catholic tradition, yet our ministry transcends parish and denominational boundaries and reaches out to all. As Benedictines, we have a sustained commitment to presence and ministry in our local communities, yet the impact of our service is often felt far afield.

Our life of prayer and community living inspires those whom we encounter in ministry and the many who come to visit the monastery. One friend of the Community shares:

"Sacred Heart Monastery is the ‘Heart’ that helps the rest of us remain attuned to the rhythm of prayer and attentive to God’s will in our day-to-day lives.  The monastery is ‘home’ for so many of us.”

Sister Eileen Gallagher, OSB - Physician

We support ourselves through our ministries and the generosity of donors. We are financially independent and do not receive regular assistance from other religious or secular institutions. Financial contributions from donors assist us with both operating needs and special projects. Examples of how your financial generosity assists us include: health care for our elderly Sisters, maintenance for our physical plant, utilities, education and spiritual formation for our Sisters, monastery outreach committees, communications and publicity for the Monastery and our corporate ministries, etc.

Volunteers join Sisters to prepare a Development Office mailing

Our benefactors also assist us by offering their time and talent for both ongoing and special projects.  Some assist with upkeep of the grounds; with special events; and hospitality for various functions at the Monastery, Retreat Center and Manor. Many smiling faces can even be seen stuffing envelopes for the Development Office mailings.

How grateful we are to all who offer their time, talent, and treasures in support of our mission. You are truly partners with us in spreading God’s love to all we encounter.

We invite you to journey with us in our ministries and mission by offering gifts of time, talent and treasures. There are many ways to support the Sisters in their varied ministries in serving the People of God. In addition, we ask for your prayerful support as we continue to build on a century-old tradition that will continue to bring peace, hope, and love to the world around us for years to come.

                                                                              With thanksgiving to God,

                                                                              Sister Tonette Sperando, OSB
